At City SC Utah South, our Pre-Academy is designed to help young players fall in love with the game in a positive, energetic, and skill-development-focused environment. Led by Pre-Academy Director Coach Nick Christensen, this program introduces players ages 4–8 to soccer through fun, movement, creativity, and age-appropriate learning experiences that can produce future top-tier soccer players.
Why Consistent Training Matters — Starting with Pre-Academy
Player development doesn’t happen overnight. It is the result of thousands of touches, decisions, repetitions, successes, mistakes, and learning opportunities accumulated over time.
Research examining the development of elite youth soccer players has found that both weekly training volume and accumulated hours of purposeful practice are important factors distinguishing elite from sub-elite developing players. Elite players were also found to spend more of their training time engaged in activities requiring decision-making, reinforcing that development isn’t simply about spending more time on the field — it’s about how that time is used.
Our Pre-Academy combines these long-term development principles with FIFA’s age-appropriate grassroots guidance, emphasizing ball mastery, repetition, small-sided games, creativity, problem-solving, decision-making, and learning through play.
We provide young players with frequent, age-appropriate opportunities to train and play in an environment built around ball mastery, meaningful touches, repetition, small-sided games, creativity, problem-solving and decision-making.
At this age, our goal isn’t to manufacture wins or trophies. It’s to give young players the time, quality of training, and environment needed to build an exceptional technical foundation and a lifelong love for the game.
